I have always been a naturally curious and analytical person, so it is not surprising that education has been fundamentally important to me all my life. I insist on proof of answers and solutions and will not just accept explanations blindly. I prefer elegant yet simple solutions. I am interested in a broad range of topics: science, mathematics, economics, music, computer science, medicine, investing, portfolio management, statistics, and entrepreneurship. I especially like statistics and predictive analytics. These tools help define the limits of what we know. Information technology is transforming our world. Both education and healthcare, two conservative institutions have been relatively slow to adopt the benefits of information technology. Medical education, a particularly conservative institution, has been especially slow to adapt but the access to information and the opportunities for remote education fostered by the Internet are unprecedented and changing this landscape.. The way students learn is being transformed by this unlimited access to information. Patients are becoming informed/empowered consumers and physicians are less able to keep up with the rapid advance in medical knowledge. Genomics, pharmaceutical design, cancer research breakthroughs and information technology (wireless technology and big data predictive analytics) are changing the way medicine is practiced. Personalized medicine based on individual genomic data will soon be possible. While there are risks related to privacy and security, the potential gain is immense. My desire is to participate and contribute to these revolutionary advances.
