Tom's practice focuses on new technology and product start-up companies, intellectual property disputes (patent, copyright, trade secrets & trademark), business and IP disputes and government contracts with specialty industry experience in biotechnology, high technology, internet law, aviation, entertainment matters and patent infringement litigation.

In addition to teaching students, lawyers and businesses, Tom has authored the Virginia Lawyer’s Deskbook - Chapter 8 Intellectual Property (2015), IP Litigation (2011), IP Jam - Patents, Trademarks, Copyright & Trade Secrets (2014), and Footprint Approach to Patent Damages (Knowledge Group 2016). In addition to the state and Federal courts of DC, VA and MD, he is a member of and has tried matters before the Court of Federal Claims, the Federal Circuit, the Veteran’s Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Tom is a Virginia and Washington DC SuperLawyer, a Virginia Legal & Business Elite, rated 10.0 on AVVO and the veteran owned firm has been named a Best Law Firm in Virginia for 2014-2016. Tom has been named a Power 100 Lawyer (Hollywood Reporter) and has appeared on national television both on legal panels (recently at Sundance film festival) and in television commercials.

In addition to nine years as an Army officer (Cavalry) where he served as Recon Scout, aide-de-camp, and a company commander, he also is an instrument pilot, holds an MBA and an MS in Biotechnology. Tom has served as a Special Prosecutor and has a background in finance from time spent in commercial banking at Chase and the Bank of New York.
