Kite Medical

Galway, Ireland

Kidney Reflux or Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is the most common urological condition in children (up to 3% of the population and 30% -40% of children presenting with a UTI).The standard diagnosis test for VUR is the Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) and involves catheterization and radiation exposure, which is very traumatic for the children and families. Recent regulatory initiatives to reduce radiation exposure in children has resulted in less referrals for VCUG and under-diagnosis of the condition, which can have detrimental effects in these cases. A study published in 2016 detailed that 33% of children on the UK kidney transplant list have kidney dysplasia due to reflux.Kite’s technology comprises a lightweight, ergonomic control box attached to a single use belt, fitted around the child’s waist. Changes within the kidneys are monitored allowing the physician to detect VUR. The device is suitable for initial screening for VUR, as well as surveillance monitoring. The device will gather digital information to detect VUR and encourage cost savings and a move towards outpatient care. The clinical and commercial timing is optimum for a non- invasive method of screening for VUR as it gives parents and physicians an alternative that will avoid catheterisation and radiation exposure.
