About

Fred Trotter is a Healthcare Data Journalist and author. He is a founder of CareSet Systems and The DocGraph Journal, a technical blogger for O’Reilly Radar, and co-author of the first Health IT O’Reilly book "Hacking Healthcare". CareSet’s Patch creates a comprehensive map of the healthcare system, by showing how healthcare providers collaborate to deliver healthcare. Basically, we use Big Data techniques (some of them anyways) to reveal patterns in the claims and prescribing patterns of Medicare, and provide that evidence back out to the healthcare industry. The DocGraph Journal seeks to create and disseminate new open healthcare data sets, and to foster a community of data scientists who contribute tools and expertise to the analyses of open healthcare data. Fred has been working in open data and software solutions Health IT for years and is a recognized leader in the design and implementation of EHR systems. He represented the Open Source community in the NCVHS testimony on the definition of Meaningful Use. Fred's has a background in Information Security and Health IT, with more recent focus in the ways that healthcare data can be used to improve patient experience and save lives. Trotter has spent considerable time working in the patient safety community and patient engagement. Fred was a founder of the Direct Project and one of the designers of the Direct Protocol. The Direct Protocol is a secure email standard for doctor-doctor and doctor-patient communications that is now part of the meaningful use standard for EHR systems. His first claims to fame was the development of the first open source medical billing engine, starting his career working with claims data. Fred Graduated from Trinity University where he worked on Hive-based and Artificial Neural Network Artificial Intelligence methods for his senior projects.
