Good Morning Healthcare Innovation Enthusiasts!
And yes, for those of you old enough to remember Robin Williams' "Good Morning Vietnam" radio greetings in the movie of the same name, I am comparing healthcare innovation to Vietnam. Because it is a fight and we are in "the shit", as they called it back then, to be knee-deep in a rice paddy with enemies around every corner, and sometimes behind you (another movie reference - Sam Kinison in Back to School - if you know you know, if you don't check this out.). When we see Babylon, Bright, Pear and so many other great disruptive innovators struggling, it reminds me that we are at war with the status quo. There exist extremely strong incentives to disrupt disruptors. When traditional payors stop paying a chronic care management provider that will reduce costs if implemented well during the late implementation phase, stating that it is just too expensive, it is exactly the shortsightedness that the perverse incentives of healthcare regulation and common practices cause. Notwithstanding myriad rigorous studies showing prevention and chronic care management work, they are not being widely adopted and implemented. This needs to change.
To that end we help innovators along however we can, supporting them, investing in them, introducing them to key clients and helping drive adoption through our Funds, Events, Platforms and business development arm. We also bring our companies to aligned investors, ones that will protect and support the innovators in their journey. If you want to be involved or know someone, please keep reading and helping. Join us in our events and network and share this email with like-minded folks. Together we can make a difference but we can't do it without the good people who believe we can make healthcare work better for all of us.
ok, I'll get of my soap box and share with you what's good next week.
Thanks for all you do to drive healthcare innovation!
Warm Regards,
Alex
p.s. Yes, I know it is not morning for all of you anymore. In my defense, I know you guys are all over the world and in a sense, isn't it always the morning if we are at the dawn of a new era? Also, distractions... am I right?!? On to the news...
MedMoNews
Intersystems Global Summit and Startup Day
Hollywood, FL
June 4-7
We are helping our friend and MedStartr Mentor Shereese Maynard find a few more great companies to get involved in the Intersystems startup ecosystem. If you don't know, Intersystems writes the code for the languages and infrastructure that Epic, the VA's systems and about 70% of healthcare IT is written on. The OG of the OGs of systems. I was writing mumps code in the 90s for ADL and a few other systems and am happy to help both a great company and a great friend. They are also looking to invest in some early-stage companies, so many benefits. I'll be there on the 7th (Startup Day) so see you for their startup day or go to their huge conference in full. Register and learn more here (Startup day only) or here (Full Summit.) We likely will hold an after event in Miami, which would be our 4th MedMoMiami, so if that sounds fun, reach out to me here.

Next Time at Your Place?
We are gearing up for our global community expansion so if you want to start a MedStartr Community like our amazing 7,600 member MedStartr.NYC meetup group (aka Health 2.0 NYC) in your city we have a new program for that including a free meetup organizer account, training sessions, our sponsorship and partnership packages, tons of training and us showing up to do events with you every six months. Building your local community is one of the best things you can do to drive innovation and since HIMSS bought the Health 2.0 brand and their 218 local chapters, over 95% of those chapters have gone inactive. This is sad and fucked up and we would like to fix that so we signed up for a meetup pro account and have four chapters already. Chapter leaders get to message members everywhere and learn from me on how to make impossible stuff happen in healthcare - through events! Book a time to talk or fill out the form here to get started. What About Our Place?
MedStartr is working on re-establishing our MedStartr Labs concept in NYC. We Started in NYC, have run over 100 events in NYC and seven of our portfolio companies are here. Our first event back last month was fantastic and the idea gained momentum, check all 110 pics, many taken by the amazing new MedStartr.nyc Sponsor and PR expert Jennifer Ringler of Read Healthy Communications. Thanks Jen! We have been shopping for a space in mid-town where we can do events, set up training sessions, run our accelerator, maybe a clinical test lab and have places that people like us get to work together every day. A place to Connect, Collaborate, and Create the Future of healthcare together. Sounds awesome, right? Join us!There are tons of opportunities, we will be sending you more next week so stay tuned! If you have news to share, please send them to News@MedStartr.com
Thanks for all you do to drive healthcare innovation forward every day!
