Hello Healthcare Innovation Doers, Dreamers, Allies and Investors!

Thank you to so many of you who have reached out in the last few weeks.  We decided to start getting more regular with the newsletters, shooting to send them out every Tuesday and do what we can to drive healthcare innovation forward faster.  Spurred by the failure of a few great healthcare startups this Spring, we just think we need to do more.  And the response has been wonderful.  We are talking to many new leaders who want to start communities in their cities, people to join us in the next fund, and most importantly, people interested in working with the startups that win our contests, are in our portfolio, and that we talk about here.  We are very grateful and know that we are only a platform and a way for everyone to learn about these creative and impactful new ways to do healthcare and that we are nothing without you.

But today I have a different message.  I don’t talk about it much, but pretty much everyone in my family dies of cancer and it's having a particularly successful year among the people I love. When I noticed this pattern in my 20s I switched from Physics to Pathology and was a cancer researcher for years working on some of the early p53 studies and WINS (Women's Interventional Nutritional Survey.). I helped make some progress but then left my PhD program, started a healthtech company, became a PPMC then Hospital CIO and left the lab behind as I saw that I could have a rapid impact on millions of patients very quickly.  And while I have no regrets, cancer still wins way too much. After losing Casey Quinlan and with a few of my close family members battling now, I really can’t wait for cancer to have a bad year. 

That's why I was very excited to see Mona Jhaveri's Music Beats Cancer event for survivors.  I met Mona about six years ago when MBC was just getting some traction.  Love that she has been successful with her idea and that I have a Gala she is doing to tell you all about.  More info on that below but it looks like an incredible event.  Some of our MedStartr Partners, Mentors and Investors are going, but alas, I am on the road at the Intersystems conference with Marc Rippen from Alertgy, Dr. Nima Schei from Hummingbirds.ai, Brooks Wood from Helpp.ai and the amazing Shereese Maynard introducing these amazing startups that will change healthcare to the company that writes the software languages 70% of healthcare systems are written in - who are looking for companies like them to invest in and accelerate.  I hope to see many of you there, but it is hard to be everywhere and do everything at once without some reality-bending tricks.  But that just emphasizes the truth that we can't do this alone.

Intersystems Global Summit and Startup Day
