Excuse my lack of enthusiasm
We lost Anthony Masters, 38 on Monday at 9:48 AM. Son of Gregg Masters, one of our team members since 2010 collaborating on projects and programs we have run with his deep healthcare, video, writing and social media experience. So when he called saying his son had been hit while biking in NYC, I told him to come stay with me as long as he needed. With significant TBI, he was slowly progressing last week. But he was intubated late last week and despite his respiratory distress and falling O2 saturation, the on-call physician decided not to come in and his care experienced a significant gap. Depleted of oxygen, his brain declined further with little EEG activity by morning. His brain stem was affected and his heart stopped. As a father, I can't imagine. I don't want to. But my friend Gregg Masters is going through that now. And he is angry at a system that failed his son. Overworked physicians, too burnt out to care about yet another patient that is dumped on them late at night and a lack of continuity of care, summarized as "Not My Patient / Not My Problem", is a common problem that plagues healthcare. If you can't bill for it and no one is held accountable, this kind of thing happens somewhere in America many times every single day and it's time to change that.To that end, Gregg is starting a foundation in the name of his son to address this. As a former managed care executive, Walking Gallery member, and healthcare innovation activist, he knows how to drive change in healthcare. Please visit his website at HealthInnovationMedia.com to read more and join the cause.
And this is why most of us got into healthcare innovation because we saw how much better the system needs to be. And we can do things to fix it hebefore it is too late for others. It is too late for Anthony, but let's not let this "never happen" #NMP event happen again. A Shiva-like gathering will take place this weekend, probably at my place, so please contact me if you want to come, bring food, and hear all about the wonderful man Anthony was.
There are a few events we have highlighted below. As always, please send in news to share and we will help spread the word.
Thanks for all you do to drive healthcare innovation, clearly we have a long way to go.
Warm Regards,
Alex
