Hello Healthcare Innovation Enthusiasts, Innovators and Investors!
I just want to pay special tribute to a friend and advisor we lost in February, Rick Goldman of Amwins and co-creator of the MedStartr 2027 plan we are executing on. He was the most supportive, generous guy we knew and helped us design what we think will be a transformative approach to helping healthcare evolve faster. With his inside view of how the insurance industry works, he had dozens of conversations with me on the topic. To read more about him, click here. He will be missed and this highlights the importance of doing things now, and not waiting until tomorrow. He died of a sudden heart attack and is survived by his lovely wife Loren and son. He is depicted at the far right above with a few other leaders at AMWINS Florida HQ, the largest insurance broker in the US. And yes, I know I need to not raise my arm like that in pictures but the #1 means let's find a way that everybody wins, which is what Rick was great at. I will do my best to carry on his legacy but will need help from all of you.
In other news, we are back from a three-week tour finding amazing new companies all over the US and from around the world. First at ViVE then helping at the annual AAPM (Pain Management) conference in Phoenix and then on to one of our favorites, the SXSW conference with great speakers, startup, music and food too. I tell you, running MedStartr is the best job in the world, not for travel, honestly I don't really like that, but for seeing the wealth of human creativity and connecting with and helping people inspired to help make healthcare work better for all of us. While there are ups and down, clearly a new age is upon us. Our job is to help that along as best we can, not just by investing and accelerating the best teams, but by helping people like yourself connect, collaborate, and together, create the future of healthcare. We make it sustainable through our funds in the best teams we find through our events, contests, accelerator and fund. It is going well and MedStartr Fund III is open to accredited investors and institutions (see NOTE below.) We got our first check while on the road for the third fund, from a happy Fund II investor couple and geniuses in their own rights - they invented a device that obviates the need for bedside pumps with a 2 cent flow restrictor. Like I said, genius. If you want to learn more about that or anything else, book a time to talk or just call 530-MEDSTAR - that line is always open and usually goes to me for startups, investors, patient activists and allies of both.
Better yet, join us at the many NYC events that we are hosting or attending.
